Personal Work
These are pieces that I create on my own time, that I would like to share with those who visit my website. Many of these works were completed during the COVID-19 outbreak, where I was confined to my house. I wanted to keep my "creative juices flowing" while stuck in self-isolation, so below are pieces that were the result of that desire. That being said, not all of these pieces posted here were completed during the pandemic and my analysis of each piece will explain what my goal was and why/when I made the work.
Self Portrait, March 2020I painted this pretty spontaneously, with no specific artistic inspiration from other artists/movements. The main focus of this painting was my ability to blend and the technique I wanted to develop in order to create smooth transitions between color/value of the color. The subject of the painting is myself, and I used a mirror and pencil to lightly sketch myself over the blended light pink background, and the purple figure was made from starting with purple paint and slowly adding white to areas that I wanted to be lighter. I'm pretty proud of the outcome and my use of contrast between the hair and the face- I wanted the viewer to focus mainly on the face, so the hair is not as detailed and is basically solid purple.

UWM Arts ECO Program Work, July 2020
For a week this summer, I participated in an Illustration class with the UWM Arts Eco Program. Throughout the week, we explored things such as figure drawing, pointillism, as well as abstraction. It was really fun to spend the week experimenting with some new materials, such as creating ink washes of cityscapes around Milwaukee. Below are some pieces that I created during that week, including a figure drawing of a crumpled bag, a pointilism illustration drawing from a collage of images, and an ink wash piece of downtown Milwaukee.
Untitled, July 2020This piece is a illustration created by stippling. I started with printing photos and creating a collage of pictures of my friends, and then traced that collage onto a sheet of paper. Once I had a rough outline done in pencil, I began to layer small dots on top of eachother. The purpose of this piece was to practice using different illustration techniques besides simply drawing as normal. I am very satisfied with the outcome, and I believe that pointillism is a great way to build contrast slowly, and the finished product is always pleasing to the eye. This piece took twelve hours to complete.

Milwaukee Cityscape 1, July 2020This is one example of the many cityscapes that we created using india ink during the program. One day, we met near the art museum area sketched out what we saw, before going in with a brush and/or reed pen with ink. I really enjoyed using ink because it is similar to watercolor, but in greyscale. Using a reed pen, I was able to create thinner and darker lines, which add detail to the piece. By mixing water with the ink, I had multiple hues of grey to add value to the illustration. As you can see, the back is unfinished, and this is because we were meant to finish the piece in a certain amount of time. I believe that this adds more character to the illustration.
